Business Days Calculator

This tool calculates the number of business days (Monday–Friday, excluding weekends) between any two dates, or adds/subtracts business days from a start date to find a due date.

Uses for the Business Days Calculator

  • Calculate a project deadline: "Start today, deliver in 15 business days"
  • Verify contract payment terms: "Invoice due net 30 business days"
  • Estimate shipping delivery windows excluding weekends
  • Calculate notice periods for employment or lease agreements
  • Determine legal deadlines (discovery, response periods, statutory notices)

Business Days Formula

For a rough calculation without a tool: Business days β‰ˆ Calendar days Γ— (5/7). This approximation works for periods of several weeks or more. For exact counts β€” especially around holidays or short periods β€” use this calculator.

Public Holidays

Public holiday calendars vary by country, region, industry, and employer. This calculator lets you manually enter holiday dates to exclude them from the business day count. You can add the specific holidays relevant to your jurisdiction for accurate results.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are business days?
Business days (also called working days) are the days of the week on which normal business operations occur β€” typically Monday through Friday, excluding public holidays. Weekends (Saturday and Sunday) are not considered business days in most countries and industries.
How do I count business days between two dates?
Count each weekday (Monday through Friday) between the two dates, inclusive of both the start and end dates. Skip any public holidays that fall on weekdays if you want to exclude them. This calculator does this automatically and also shows the number of weekends and any excluded holidays.
What does "30 business days" mean?
30 business days is approximately 6 calendar weeks (not counting weekends). Since each calendar week has 5 business days, 30 Γ· 5 = 6 weeks. In practice, public holidays may add one or two extra calendar days. Common "N business days" windows appear in contracts, shipping estimates, legal deadlines, and payment terms.
What is the difference between "business days from" vs "business days after"?
"3 business days from Monday" typically includes Monday itself β€” so Monday + Tuesday + Wednesday = Wednesday. "3 business days after Monday" typically excludes Monday β€” so Tuesday + Wednesday + Thursday = Thursday. This calculator uses "from" (inclusive of the start date) when counting forward.
Why do contract deadlines use business days?
Legal and commercial contracts use business days because courts, banks, government offices, and most businesses are closed on weekends and public holidays. Using calendar days would create situations where a deadline falls on a Sunday, creating ambiguity about when the obligation must be met. Most jurisdictions have rules that if a business day deadline falls on a non-business day, it rolls to the next business day.
